めでたい【目出度い】

1 〔祝うべき〕 happy 《ending》; propitious 《sign》; auspicious 《day》; joyous 《occasion》.

●めでたいこと a matter for congratulation; a happy [an auspicious] event

・めでたい席 an auspicious [a happy] occasion.

●おめでとう. Congratulations! [⇒おめでとうございます]

・合格した? それはおめでたい. お父さんもお喜びだろう. You've passed the exam? Congratulations! I'm sure your father is proud of you.

・今日はめでたい日だ. 大いに飲もう. This is a happy [joyous] day. Let's have a hearty drink.

2 〔人がよすぎる･愚かな〕 half-witted; stupid; silly; doltish.

●おめでたい人 a half-wit.

3 〔評価が高い〕

●上司の覚えがめでたい be in one's senior's favor.

めでたがる regard sth auspicious.
